 Position Overview
The beginning of a race with 26,000 participants can be hectic for runners, and volunteers. Your job as a Start Line Seed Monitor is to support runners while maintaining corral integrity. As a Start Line Seed Monitor, you will help form the human chain between each corral along each of the dividing lanes.
As a Start Line Seed Monitor, you will be assigned a color coded vest to correspond to each of the color-coded balloon arches. Color coded vest and caps will be issued at the time of check-in. Each corral will have ten volunteers. As a volunteer for WAVE 2, you will line-up runners in the South Pentagon Parking Lot (Lanes 1-6). WAVE 2 has three corrals:
White - Bib Numbers 14501-19500
Orange - Bib Numbers 19501-24500
Purple - Bib Numbers 24501 – and up
There will be barricades in between each corral.
As the race begins, you will escort runners to Route 27. Your human chain (including soldiers) will form again at the Start Line up along Route 27.
At 0815 the CSA and the salute guns will start the second wave. After last runner passes the first arch, it will be removed and taken to the finish line. All arches will be destroyed and disposed of in a trash compactor.
Time/Location Information
Arrive at 6:00 AM and go to the Information Tent (Volunteer Info/Lost and Found). This is located in South Pentagon Parking Lot Lane 21. After sign-in, go to the Wave 2 corral area - South Pentagon Parking Lot Lanes 1 through 6. (TOG Start Line NCOIC).

Task Detail
Ensure runners are in their proper corral
Your primary job is to ensure runners are in their proper corral. Initially, Wave 2 runners (Colors Yellow, Green, Red, and Blue) are positioned in the South Pentagon Parking Lot (Lanes 1 through 6). Your job will be to walk Wave 2 participants up the entrance ramp to Route 27 and through a human chain of Start Line Soldiers to the starting line. You will then form a human chain separating each corral. Manage runners with verbal instruction. (Runners can go down in color sequence to run with a friend, but not up in sequence).
Familiarize yourself with the schedule
Be aware of the schedule and specific times.
- NLT 0700 - Salute Guns in position (facing away from participants ahead of Start Line in the Southbound lane of Route 27).
- NLT 0730- The wheelchair and Missing Parts In Action (MPIA) are to be in position.
- At 0745 -Color Guard in position in front of the barricades at Start Line.
- At 0745 - The wheelchairs and MPIA will be started from the ground level.
- At 0750 - After the start of the wheelchairs, Start Line Soldiers will removal barricades and form a human chain to contain the participants. All participants (WAVE 1) to be walked up to the official start line.
- At 0758 - all Soldiers clear the start line.
- At 0800 - the CSA and salute cannon will officially start the first wave.
- At 0815 the CSA and the salute guns will start the second wave.
Assist with picking up discarded clothing
Runners will often discard outer clothing as they begin their run. Help pick up discarded clothing and items will be collected by the ATM contractor who will transport items back to the Garment Check.
Additional Information on Wave 2 Layout
You may find this information helpful.
- Lanes 1 – 6 will be used to hold Wave 2 runners in 3 corrals (estimated total of 8,000 to 10,000 runners). Wave 1 runners will be staged on Route 27.
- The total length of the Lanes 1 - 334 feet, Lane 2 - 338 feet, Lane 3 - 338 feet, Lane 4- 338 feet , Lane 5 - 338 feet, and Lane 6 - 338 feet (South Rotary to south side of the new North Rotary).
- The length of each Lane for each corral is 220 feet x 360 feet (each lane is 60 feet wide, 60 feet x 6 = 360 feet) = 79, 200 square feet.
- Estimate each person to occupy 6.25 feet
- 79,200 square feet / 6.25 square feet per person = 12, 672 person maximum
- The corral lanes consume 220 feet which leaves 114 feet from the end of the corral up to North Rotary Road for egress. There is additional space of the 2 lanes of North Rotary Road plus the sidewalk.
- Across from Lane 1 there will be a PA system manned by The Old Guard and in addition three other portable hand-held megaphones will be near each corral.
- Note: Lanes 1-13 will begin to empty at 0810 to proceed up to Route 27 and this space will be freed up and after WAVE 2 is underway the clean up of this area will begin.
