Army Ten-Miler - Start Line Seed Monitors: Wave One

The beginning of a race with 26,000 participants can be hectic for runners. And the time it takes for a runner to leave the corral is important for every runner - especially runners in the first Wave. Your job as a Start Line Seed Monitor is to support runners while maintaining corral integrity.

As a Start Line Seed Monitor, you will be assigned a color coded vest to correspond to each of the color-coded balloon arches. Color coded vest and caps will be issued at the time of check-in. Each corral will have ten volunteers. As a volunteer for Wave 1, you will work with runners lining up on Route 27. You will help match bib numbers to specific corrals:
Yellow - Bib Numbers 1-500
Green - Bib Numbers 501-4000
Red - Bib Numbers 4001-9000
Blue -Bib Numbers 9001-14500

Time/Location Information

Arrive at 6:00 AM and go to the Information Tent (Volunteer Info/Lost and Found). This is located in South Pentagon Parking Lot Lane 21. After sign-in, go to the starting line/corral area on U.S. 27. Report to the Office In Charge of the Start Line with soldier of The Old Guard.


Task Overview

  • Ensure runners are in their proper corral (maintains corral integrity)
    - Form a human chain, separating each "seed corral"
    - Manage runners with verbal instruction
  • Familiarize yourself with the schedule
  • Assist with picking up discarded clothing


    Task Detail

    Ensure runners are in their proper corral

    Your primary job is to ensure runners are in their proper corral. Initially, Wave 1 runners (Colors Yellow, Green, Red, and Blue) are positioned on Route 27. Your job will be to walk Wave 1 participants through a human chain of Start Line Soldiers to the starting line. You will then form a human chain separating each corral. Manage runners with verbal instruction.


    Familiarize yourself with the schedule

    Be aware of the schedule and specific times.

    • NLT 0700 - Salute Guns in position (facing away from participants ahead of Start Line in the Southbound lane of Route 27).
    • NLT 0730- The wheelchair and Missing Parts In Action (MPIA) are to be in position.
    • At 0745 -Color Guard in position in front of the barricades at Start Line.
    • At 0745 - The wheelchairs and MPIA will be started from the ground level.
    • At 0750 - After the start of the wheelchairs, Start Line Soldiers will removal barricades and form a human chain to contain the participants. All participants (WAVE 1) to be walked up to the official start line.
    • At 0758 - all Soldiers clear the start line.
    • At 0800 - the CSA and salute cannon will officially start the first wave.

    Assist with picking up discarded clothing

    Runners will often discard outer clothing as they begin their run. Help pick up discarded clothing and items will be collected by the ATM contractor who will transport items back to the Garment Check.
