Volunteer Instructions - Water Station Volunteers (Six Stations)

Army Ten-Miler - Water Station Volunteers (Six Stations)

Position Overview
Runners depend on water stations and coordinated teams of water station volunteers.
Six water stations exist within the race route. Water stations 2, 4,6, and 8 are located near a mile marker. There is also a water station at the Start and Finish Line. Each water station will be set up with Old Guard volunteers arriving at 5 AM. The Old Guard will place the water barrels and tanker trucks and begin to fill and stack water on tables 3 high.
As a volunteer, you will arrive at 6 AM. All water stations are to be operational by 7:30 AM.

When you arrive may help fill and stack cups. You may also assemble water station signs and cardboard trash boxes. During the race, you can anticipate 300 runners per minute at the water stations. Your job is to support these runners - providing water to the runners, keeping runners away from the table, without stepping into the runners' paths. After the trail party passes the water station, you will begin the clean-up of all trash in the area. Work with the ATM crew to recover all assets. The ATM staff will return these assets and vendor tables to the Pentagon Fern Street Parking Lot. Municipal and USA Track & Field guidelines apply. Time/Location Information:

As a water station volunteer, you do not report to the Volunteer Check-in Tent. You go directly to your assigned water station at 6:00 A.M. and check-in with the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).

Task Overview

  • Fill water
  • Distribute water
  • Assist with water clean-up
  • Wear appropriate clothing and act responsibly
  • Fill staffing shortages
  • Assist with last-minute tasks
Task Detail Fill water Wearing sanitized gloves, fill cups by grasping 4 cups per hand and dipping them into the water barrel and use plastic disposable pitchers. Fill all cups 3/4 of the way full. Cover the table with cups, and then use the plastic sheeting and plastic boards (coroplast) to stack cups. When stacking cups (3 high), cover cups with plastic sheeting, then place plastic coroplast boards on top of sheeting to separate layer. Your water coordinator will have a diagram for stacking levels and cup quantities. Distribute water
You and other volunteers should stand in front of tables about 5 to 8 feet apart. One person with a megaphone will provide runners with instruction on how to access the water from the water tables. As runners approach, try to make eye contact with runners (which will help you determine if they will take the cup). Provide water by grasping one cup of water in each hand, between your thumb and forefinger. Extend the cups to runners but stay out of the runners way. Make the runners come to you. Remain close to the tables so you can easily grab more cups after runners have taken cups from you. As the first table(s) runs out of water, your detail must fall back and work another table. Do not transfer cups in an effort to replenish the first table(s). Visually inspect the roadway for any debris or unsafe conditions. Do not run out of water. Cheer participants as they pass through the water stations. Observe runners for potential medical problems.
Assist with water clean-up
Begin recovery operations immediately after the last runner. Use brooms and shovels to collect trash. All trash should be deposited in the trash compactor truck to follow. Work with the Old Guard to inventory equipment for return to the Pentagon. Load tables on the truck last. Wear appropriate clothing and act responsibly
You represent the United States Army. Wear appropriate clothing for supporting the runners. Don't throw water on the runners. Support the runners with encouraging cheers.

Assist with last-minute tasks Support your team with any last-minute tasks they identify. You may, for example, provide support by assembling paper trash receptacles.
