Army Ten-Miler - Introduction/Why Volunteer

Do you want to know why people volunteer, or how they select volunteering positions or volunteering shifts? Here's some information you seek.

Why volunteer?

You'll find many reasons to volunteer for the Army Ten-Miler. Often volunteers want to "give back" and show support to the military, to the sport (running), or to a friend or family member. Sometimes people want to honor a fallen soldier, or support a specific friend or family member serving in the U.S. Army. Some volunteers want to be part of an international event drawing thousands of runners. Others just want to "hang out" and get caught up in the energy of volunteering.

As a volunteer, you may find value in the purpose of the race: to promote the Army, build espirit-de-corps, support Army fitness goals, and enhance community relations. You might also find value in the organization goals:

  • Promote and execute a world-class road race.
  • Project a positive image of the Army including current Army campaign themes.
  • Provide participants a positive experience from registration through post-race activities.
  • Secure the event and participants emphasizing deterrence and prevention.
  • Ensure the safety and care of all participants, volunteers, and support personnel.
  • Establish effective C2 to enable real-time situational awareness and quick response.
  • Establish effective means of participant feedback to improve future race management.
  • Recognize top athletic performers, volunteers, and support personnel.
  • Execute a professional and safe "world class" Army event.

Selecting a volunteering position
People select a position based upon their personality. For example, If you are outgoing you'll give out the t-shirt because there is more a personal contact. (Volunteers hand out more than 30,000 t-shirts.) If you prefer volunteer positions that are more "low key" you may like a position such as the Awards tent, where contact is limited to only those who will receive an award.

Some people look at race day as a chance to be "outside" since during the week they work "inside". Also, being outside is a form of exercise because the volunteer is moving around.

If you have volunteered in the past, you might be interested in one of the coordinator's positions . Coordinators typically begin their months before the event, and often work several days during the race weekend.

Finding a volunteering shift
You might make your choice based on time and location. One volunteer said that she will never do race day because she is not a morning person and she comes out on Friday and Saturday.

Some people volunteer all 3 days - they like the "rush" which they get and it's something out of the ordinary and they always run into someone who they met the year before.
